Cortagen

Cortagen is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) from the Khavinson bioregulator family, designed to target cerebral cortex tissue. It was developed at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology and represents the synthetic analog of Cortexin — a polypeptide complex extracted from calf cerebral cortex that has been used clinically in Russia for decades. In preclinical models, Cortagen has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in ischemic brain injury, reduced neuronal apoptosis, and modulated expression of genes associated with oxidative stress response and synaptic plasticity. Its proposed mechanism involves epigenetic regulation of cortex-specific genes. Cortexin (the parent extract) has more extensive clinical history, having been studied in stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive decline in elderly patients in Russian clinical practice. Cortagen as the synthetic peptide version aims to provide a standardized alternative to the tissue extract.
