Alanyl-Glutamine (L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine) is a dipeptide that provides a stable, water-soluble delivery form of glutamine — the most abundant amino acid in human plasma and a critical fuel source for enterocytes (gut lining cells) and immune cells. Free glutamine is notoriously unstable in solution and degrades to pyroglutamic acid; the dipeptide form bypasses this limitation. In clinical settings, Ala-Gln is used in parenteral nutrition for critically ill patients, where glutamine depletion is associated with gut barrier breakdown, bacterial translocation, and immune dysfunction. It has also been studied in sports medicine for gut permeability reduction during exercise-induced heat stress, and in oral rehydration solutions for enhanced intestinal water and electrolyte absorption. The peptide bond is cleaved by intracellular dipeptidases, releasing free alanine and glutamine for metabolic use.
