Cenegermin
Growth Factor

Cenegermin

Dompé (Oxervate)

Cenegermin is a recombinant form of human nerve growth factor (NGF), delivered as a preservative-free ophthalmic (eye-drop) solution and marketed as Oxervate. NGF is a naturally occurring neurotrophin essential to the survival and function of nerves, including the sensory nerves that supply the cornea. Cenegermin is the first approved topical NGF therapy and is used to treat neurotrophic keratitis, a rare degenerative disease of the cornea. Neurotrophic keratitis arises when the corneal nerves are damaged — by herpes infections, diabetes, surgery, chemical burns, or other causes — leaving the cornea numb and unable to maintain and repair itself. This can progress from surface breakdown to persistent epithelial defects and, in severe cases, corneal ulceration, melting, or perforation that threatens sight. Because the underlying problem is loss of the trophic (nourishing) nerve signal, replacing NGF directly at the ocular surface addresses a root cause rather than only the symptoms. Cenegermin is a genuine, approved biologic medicine prescribed and monitored by ophthalmologists, typically dosed several times a day over an eight-week course. It is not a wellness or research peptide, and it is unrelated to the injectable 'growth-factor peptides' sometimes sold in that market. This entry is an educational reference on an approved neurotrophin therapy for a specific corneal disease; any treatment is directed by an eye specialist.

Clinical Evidence

In randomized controlled trials (the REPARO trial in Europe and a subsequent US study), an 8-week course of cenegermin eye drops significantly increased complete corneal healing in patients with moderate-to-severe neurotrophic keratitis compared with vehicle, with healing largely maintained during follow-up in many patients. The most common adverse effect was eye pain or discomfort on instillation, consistent with restoring sensation to a previously numb cornea. These data supported approval as the first topical NGF therapy for this rare disease. Treatment is prescribed and monitored by ophthalmologists; this entry summarizes approved use rather than off-label application.
