Pentosan Polysulfate (PPS)
Prescription
Pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) is a semi-synthetic heparinoid derived from beechwood hemicellulose. While technically a polysaccharide rather than a peptide, it is commonly discussed alongside peptide therapies for joint and connective tissue health due to its mechanism of restoring glycosaminoglycan layers and its overlap with the BPC-157/TB-500 healing conversation. FDA-approved as Elmiron for interstitial cystitis (bladder pain syndrome), PPS acts by coating the damaged urothelial glycosaminoglycan layer. In orthopedic medicine, injectable PPS has demonstrated chondroprotective effects in animal models and small human studies — reducing cartilage degradation markers, improving synovial fluid quality, and decreasing osteoarthritis pain scores. Australian veterinary medicine has used injectable PPS (Zydax/Pentosan Equine) for decades for joint disease in horses and dogs.
