Thymalin (Thymic Polypeptide Complex)

Thymalin is a polypeptide complex extracted from calf thymus tissue, developed in the 1970s by Vladimir Khavinson and approved for clinical use in Russia and several CIS countries. It contains a mixture of short peptides that collectively modulate thymic function and T-cell immunity. The most cited clinical work involves a 15-year follow-up of elderly patients treated with Thymalin plus Epithalamin (pineal extract). The treatment group showed significantly reduced mortality (mortality ratio 2.0–2.5× lower) compared to matched controls. This longitudinal gerontological study, while notable, has not been replicated independently. In standard clinical practice in Russia, Thymalin is used for immune reconstitution after infections, surgery, chemotherapy, and in immunodeficient states. It is administered intramuscularly in 10-day courses. The synthetic analog Vilon (KE dipeptide) was developed to provide a standardized, non-animal-derived alternative.
